Arthur Albert Fantham was a well-respected Hāwera farmer involved with many aspects of the developing town. He died on 16 January 1904. The statue, near the Camberwell Rd entrance to Hāwera's King Edward Park, was unveiled on 4 March 1908 after being funded by public donations.
The plaque on the statue reads: Arthur Albert Fantham, erected by the people of Hawera and surrounding districts, in memory of an energetic and enterprising settler 1842 - 1904
