On 25 June 1907 (p.4) the Taranaki Herald reported that Mr Carter from the Carrington Road Board had announced that a drinking trough was to be installed on Victoria Road. On 7 October 1907 (p.4) the same newspaper reported that work had commenced on the trough.
Finally, on 7 November 1907 (p.4) the Taranaki Herald wrote simply that, "the water has been turned on to the horse drinking trough at the junction of Victoria Road and Carrington Road".
In 1989 the New Plymouth City Council restored the horse trough and installed a seat to create a rest area for passers-by.
