Originally located at the main park entrance on Liardet Street, these gates were shifted to the Victoria Street entrance following construction of the Sanders entrance in 1938.
The gates were gifted to the people of New Plymouth in 1890 by Robert Hughes - father of prominent local lawyer Robert Clinton Hughes.
They were designed by architect, Arthur Mofflin, and completed in November 1890.
