The only surviving toll-gate building in Taranaki, Rahiri Lodge was built in 1929 as accommodation for a toll-gate keeper. As well as collecting tolls for the Park Board for road maintenance, the gatekeeper later controlled traffic on the narrow, single lane access road to North Egmont. Toll collecting stopped about 1946 and the road was made two-way by the Inglewoood County Council in April 1955.
The Lodge is presently used for private accommodation.
In 1954 the Taranaki Herald profiled gate keeper Alfred George Jenkins, possibly the last person employed to do this job at North Egmont.
