This retaining wall constructed of large blocks of Taranaki andesite probably dates to 1899-1900 - around the same time the two-storied villa on the section was built.
Whilst not as elaborate as the wall at neighbouring 11 Vivian Street, it is one of only a few surviving retaining walls of this style in New Plymouth.
