George Hartnell purchased Lot 5 of Deeds Plan 21 from Thomas Kingwell Skinner in February 1910. However, it wasn't until 1913 that Hartnell constructed 122 Hine Street, with a permit for the construction of a residence on Lot 5, Hine Street, granted on 24 April 1913 - the estimated construction cost was £260.
George Hartnell was a well-known builder who constructed a number of villas across New Plymouth in the period prior to WWI - the wide front gable is a characteristic feature of Hartnell's villas. The villas at nearby 7 and 9 Belt Road were also constructed by Hartnell around the same time.
In July 1913, Hartnell sold the property to 'Hardwidge', who seems to have rented the home until selling the property to Walter Henry Pankhurst in February 1917. The property was purchased by 'Linn' in March 1921, who appears to have retained ownership (probably as a rental) until at least 1927, when the property title was issued under The Land Transfer Act.
