A permit was granted to H. G. (Herbert George) Armistead in September 1924 for the construction of a "garage" on Town Section 1414, Devon Street East - Coleman & Son were the builders, and the estimated construction cost was £1500.
In 1925 Armistead (of New Plymouth Sash & Door Co.) advertised the lease of the building - described as a "large, new, Concrete Building of one room".
In 1938 the building was occupied by L. H. Johnson Motors, who also operated from the building on the NE corner of Devon and Gover Streets.
The building has been occupied by Cleggs Furniture Court since the 1980s.
