One of four homes constructed for the New Plymouth Borough Council in 1921, presumably for use as dwellings for council workers - three of the four homes survive, and are located at 43, 45 and 47 McLean Street. This house at 20 Beach Street was demolished or removed from the site about 2024.
A permit was granted by the New Plymouth Borough Council to themselves on 5 August 1921 for the construction of '4 cottages' on sections 17 and 18, McLean Street - H. Peterson was the builder, and the estimated construction cost for all 4 homes was £3000.
The three remaining homes have social value as an example of a local council providing social housing for its employees.
