Little is currently known about the history of this house, although it was probably constructed sometime between about 1886 and 1900. Whilst a structure is present at this location on a map of New Plymouth complied by Thomas Kingwell Skinner in mid-late 1880, when Town Section 197 was sold as part of the bankrupt estate of owner Walter Read in March 1886, no mention of a dwelling was made - it was simply described as "level, fenced, and nicely planted".
Further, following the sale of the property, a property title was issued under The Land Transfer Act in May 1886, and Town Section 197 was described as "unoccupied". By 1906, the section was listed for sale with 'two houses' - 25 Gaine Street being constructed in 1903.
