This cottage was probably constructed sometime during early 1902 for New Plymouth timber firm Henry Brown and Co. and was likely used as worker accommodation.
Henry Brown & Co are listed as the ratepayers for Town Section 33 (along with several adjacent sections), since at least the 1900-01 rating year. Brown & Co. initially leased the sections from Arthur Standish, although this wasn’t recorded in the Land Deeds Index until early 1902.
Up until the 1901-02 rating year, no buildings are noted as being constructed on the sections. However, from the 1902-03 rating year, both a timber mill and a cottage are noted as being present on the sections.
