35 Weymouth Street (1922)

A permit was granted by the Borough Council to S. Coad on 27 July 1922 for the construction of a house on Town Section 194, Aubrey Street - Coad was the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £400.

The building is a rare example of 1920s workers dwelling, located in an area with a cluster of workers cottages constructed from the 1850s until the 1920s. These include 20 Aubrey Street (1856-57), 4 Aubrey Street (1860s), 208 Devon Street West (also constructed by Coad, in the 1910s), and the present cottage at 35 Weymouth Street (1922). This cluster of workers homes is now rare, and can provide insights into an important, yet often neglected segment of society.
