This large two-storied house was constructed for architect David Hutton as his private residence in 1914. Hutton almost certainly designed the house himself, with the building sharing similarities with the earlier Hutchens Residence at 17 Bell Street, designed by Hutton the previous year.
A permit for the construction of a residence on Town Section 729 for D. Hutton was granted by the New Plymouth Borough Council on 1 May 1914 - the estimated value was £800, and Hutton is noted as the architect.
