In October 1916, plans for a cottage for J. Bransgrove on Town Section 1639 were deposited with the Borough Council - estimated cost £200. Despite a likely construction date of 1916, the style of the cottage is probably more characteristic of those constructed in the early 1900s, and may reflect skills and materials shortages during the First World War.
Town Section 1639 was originally part of Ferndell Estate, purchased by F. P. Corkill in the 1890s, and then subdivided and sold from 1893 onwards. The section is thought to have been purchased by William Courtney, and then J. Bransgrove. It appears this was the only cottage on Town Section 1639 until neighbouring 65 Pendarves Street was constructed in the early 1930s.
