A permit for the construction of a residence on Part Town Sections 1667, 1669, and Part Closed Road (Gilbert Street), was granted to H. M. Bacon in September 1924 - the builder/ contractor was Boon Bros, and the estimated construction cost was £3000; a particularly expensive home.
A copy of the original plans is held by NPDC, and the architect is noted as J. H. Barrett, New Plymouth - nothing is currently known about Barrett, although he seems to have been a skilled architect.
This is probably the largest home in this style constructed in New Plymouth, and one of the largest private residences constructed in New Plymouth during the 1920s.
