A permit for the construction of a residence for Ernest Colin Hayton on Town Section 1088, Fillis Street, was granted by the Borough Council in November 1923 - the builder was G. S. Burton, and the estimated construction cost was £1250.
Chellow Dene, meaning park-like area, takes its name from a park in the city of Bradford, Yorkshire, England - Hayton's home city from which he emigrated.
This home is part of a row of four 1920s-30s homes near the entrance to Pukekura Park.
