This block of three apartments on the east side of Liardet Street was built for the New Plymouth Fire Board in 1939. The residential flats were for the use of permanent staff and their families.
A building permit was issued on 1 March 1939 to the New Plymouth Fire Board - the builders were Jones & Sandford and the estimated cost, £5,085.
Puke Ariki holds a sheet of the original plans, dated March 1938, drawn by the architectural firm, Messenger, Taylor & Wolfe.
The flats were nestled between the Montrose Hotel (still standing) and the fire station which was then located on the north-eastern corner of Liardet and Courtenay Streets.
It's not known when the building was demolished (it appears in an aerial photograph taken in 1980) and where it stood is now (2024) part of the forecourt of the "Z" (previously Shell) service station.
