The major components of the main block at Fitzroy School were constructed in stages between 1930 and 1948. In 1930 two 'Taranaki Type' fresh air classrooms were constructed. In 1935 a further 3 fresh air classrooms, headmasters office, teachers room and storeroom were added to the first two classrooms. In 1948 another two classrooms of an improved design were added to the main block. It is unclear which buildings were constructed at what date.
Minor alterations have been made since 1948, although the major external structure has remained relatively unchanged, and is an excellent example of 1930s-40s Taranaki Education Board architecture; adapted and extended to cater for a growing roll and changing educational requirements. In 2000, a new staffroom was added on top of the main school office.
