This home originally started life as a small cottage constructed in 1910. The original cottage occupied a very narrow part of Town Section 1650 - plans for a cottage on Town Section 1650 were submitted by W. Jenkinson who owned the section on 21 June 1910.

The Jenkinson's are thought to have lived in a large villa on the adjacent part of Section 1650, on the corner of Pendarves and Eliot Streets (since demolished). For a circa 1930 view of the cottage in its original state and the corner villa, see attached photograph from Te Papa's collection.

Sometime in the 1940s the cottage was enlarged considerably and extended onto part of Town Section 1651. The original section of the cottage is the rear, western side of the building - the western wall still retains its original sash windows.
