While the first Kentucky Fried Chicken store opened in Auckland in 1971, New Plymouth had to wait until 1974 to taste Colonel Sanders' famous recipe.
The city's first store was located at 497 Devon Street East and opened on 29 May 1974. The firm Beca, Carter, Hollings and Ferner submitted plans for the store. The distinctive design was the same throughout the country.
KFC opened new premises in Courtenay Street on 12 December 1988.
It is currently (2024) operated as "Snappers Takeaway".
