A permit was granted to Torquil Vavasour Mackay on 5 December 1911 for the construction of a residence on Barrett Street - no architect is listed, although the estimated construction cost was £597 5s.

Town Section 556 was originally Education Reserve Land (see DP655). The section was leased to Victor Elliot in March 1910, the lease was transferred from H. C. Wright to Philip Hopkins in November 1910, and transferred from P. Hopkins to T. V. Mackay, April 1911.

T. V. Mackay was born in Ross, Westland in 1881 and was a draughtsman with the Department of Lands and Survey. He lived in the home until his death in 1951.
