This bungalow was constructed for James Moorby in 1923. A building permit was granted to Moorby by the New Plymouth Borough Council on 8 October 1923, with P. J. Preston noted as the builder, and the estimated construction cost being £685.
Moorby, a retired farmer, purchased New Plymouth Town Section 724 in 1920, and several years after the construction of the present house, he had the property subdivided into two allotments in 1927.
A rear extension (55 Dawson St) was added at a later date.
The house was demolished in late 2021 to make way for a residential development to be known as Dawson Apartments. This was put on hold and the empty section was used for car parking. In 2025 building work began on the corner section.
