In 1895 this two-storey building was erected for Mr C.W. Govett. Three shops fronted Devon Street and the Liardet Street entrance led to private apartments upstairs. James Sanderson was the architect, and the contractor was Mr C. Webberley
The building was extensively renovated in 1910 for the Melbourne Clothing Company. This time the architects were Sanderson & Griffiths and the contractor, Mr W. Howson.
In 1919 Mr James Scanlan joined the company and eventually the clothing store became known as "Scanlans".
The T & G Company bought the building in 1954 (and presumably changed the name of the building around this time); it was demolished in 1971 to make way for the T & G Building (now Devon Centre).
