The dining block & maid's quarters at New Plymouth Boys' High School were built in 1939. The architect was the well-known Thomas H. Bates.
Bates called for tenders in December 1938 and in February 1939 it was announced that Boon Bros. Ltd.'s tender of £10,597 had been accepted.
At the annual breakup ceremony at Boys' High in December 1939 it was reported that the kitchen block and dining room would be ready early the following year.
Finally in August 1940 the Taranaki Daily News announced that the kitchen was now feeding 250 boys and that, it was "the last word in eating comfort and reaches the highest point in cooking efficiency".
