'Reo Moana' is probably New Plymouth's best remaining example of an art deco/moderne block of flats, and one New Plymouth's best art-deco buildings generally.
A permit was granted by the Borough Council to commercial traveller Arthur Charles Jackson on 18 November 1938 for the construction of six flats on Town Section 40, Weymouth and Hine Streets - Sidney Raymond Smith was the architect and builder, with the estimated construction cost £6285.
Jackson himself occupied flat no. 6 for much of the 1940s before relocating to Auckland.
Art deco buildings are relatively uncommon in New Plymouth, with few built, and many of those that were having been demolished.
The building was repainted in 2019.
