In March 1914, a permit for the construction of a residence on Part Town Section 1602, Eliot Street, was granted by the Borough Council - the client was Mrs J. A. Roberts, with the estimated value being £593.
During June 1914, it was reported in Progress, New Zealand's first architectural periodical, that a residence for Mrs Roberts in Eliot Street was in the course of erection - the architects were noted as Sanderson & Griffiths, and the contractor as Mr W. S. Cliff.
The Robert's (James Annear and Nellie Elizabeth) operated the neighbouring shop, and as they lived in the adjoining residence they initially rented-out this house. James died in 1917 and Nellie sold the shop in 1919 - it was at this time that she moved into the present house. Nellie remained living at the house until 1924, when the property was purchased by the Rev John Nixon.
Rev Nixon devoted his life to the Primitive Methodist faith, and was a highly respected local citizen. He continued to live in the house until his death on 2 March 1947, having attained the grand age of 95 years.
