This house was probably constructed in late 1894 or early 1895 for P. B. Ross Snr.
Peter Ross purchased the section on which 339 Devon Street West is located on 27 November 1894. Peter Ross, Mechanical Engineer, is first listed as living at this location in the 1895 edition of Stone's Street Directory. He appears to have shifted to Wellington about 1905, retaining ownership of the house until 1907, when it was sold to M. Williams. the property was sold by Williams to W. Cutfield in April 1911, and then by Cutfield to J. G. Brush in January 1919.
It is probably the first house constructed on this Part of Town Belt B following subdivision of the section in the early 1890s.
The home has a notably 'Gothic' appearance and is the only home in this style remaining in New Plymouth - Whites Aviation aerial images reveal several other single-story homes in this style once graced New Plymouth's streets.
