This bungalow was constructed for Mrs Sainsbury in 1920. Noted New Plymouth architects Messenger and Griffiths designed the home and called for tenders for its construction in May 1920.
A permit was finally granted by the Borough Council to Mrs Sainsbury on 5 September 1923 for the construction of a house on Part Section 91, Devon Street East – J. C. Rowe was the builder, and the estimated construction cost was £1800.
The delays in construction were likely caused by the severe shortage of materials and labour at the time.
