This cottage was constructed in 1896-97 for prominent New Plymouth solicitor William Kerr, with the architect being James Sanderson.

The two Town Sections (762 and 776) on which this house sits were purchased by James Paul in 1884. After earth was removed from the slopes of Pukaka/Marsland Hill in 1894 to allow access to the sections, Paul sold them to Kerr. Kerr engaged Sanderson to design a house for the site and tenders were called for in December 1896.

The Kerrs moved to Whanganui in 1908 but retained ownership of the property. After William's death in 1918 his wife Isabella returned to New Plymouth and the Brougham Street residence. She stayed there until 1925 when she sold the house and moved to Bulteel Street.

It is clad in rusticated weatherboard and retains its original sash windows and chimney.
