Part of Town Section P was purchased by William John Shaw in 1890, and it's thought this house was built around this time.
The exterior of the two-storied home is in largely original condition and is clad in rusticated weatherboard with sash windows. The steep gabled roof and exterior detailing give the home a notable gothic appearance - a rarity in New Plymouth homes.
William John Shaw died in 1905, and following his death, Mrs Shaw had the neighbouring home at 5 Rogan Street constructed.
