Sausage Sizzle, Ngāmotu Beach. Collection of Puke Ariki (PHO2017-0007).
There is nothing more kiwi than the sausage sizzle, and at only 50 cents who could resist? The price might have gone up since this photograph was taken, but the satisfaction of eating piping hot sausages and half-cooked onion rings in white bread, topped with a generous amount of tomato sauce, remains the same. This scene from one of the annual Big Dig and Raft Race events at Ngāmotu Beach in New Plymouth evokes the classic smells and tastes of summer.
The Big Dig and Raft Race saw crowds of people enjoying the sun, digging for prizes and racing on home-made rafts. Organised by the Egmont Lions Club, the event was a way of fundraising for community projects including the playgrounds at Pukekura Park and East End Reserve. The tradition continues today with a Big Dig held at Ngāmotu Beach every year as part of the TSB Bank Festival of Lights.
