In 1922 the young Idris Galcia Hall applied for a position as secretary and driver for the self proclaimed ‘Captain’ Walter Wanderwell, who was about to embark on an ambitious world tour in a customised Model T Ford. In actual fact, the role demanded much more of Idris.

While on the road she performed a multitude of roles from seamstress to salesperson, interpreter to mechanic, all under the name “Aloha Wanderwell” which was bestowed upon her by the Captain. Along the way the Wanderwell’s fell in love and were married, making good on the name Aloha had adopted years before.

In 1936, during one of her final journeys, Aloha toured New Zealand. Pictured here, Aloha (centre) and two women admire her Ford V8 Centrepoise, decorated with the badges of over 60 associates from around the world outside the Plaza Theatre in Stratford.
