PHO2010_0515.jpg (1) "Craig & Tractor" (2009). Maia McDonald. Collection of Puke Ariki (PHO2010-0515).

This compelling portrait captures a farm worker as he prepares to spray farmland on Junction Road, near Egmont Village. The photograph strikes a fascinating balance between the candid and the theatrical, and is from a series of six photographs called "Taranaki Farm Boys", first shown at Gallery Impaire, Paris, France. The series documents farming environments that Taranaki photographer Maia McDonald both grew up with and worked within. She says of the series, “There were certain jobs that were undertaken on the farms that interested me and the shots evolved very organically over the time I spent working with the boys.”  Maia’s photographs aim to portray her subjects' strength of character and an evocative sense of place.
