Sliding around in the snow seems to be common theme in Joyce Beale’s album of photographs, donated to Puke Ariki in 2010 by the Stratford Mountain Club. This image, captioned “The consequence of too much sliding”, is testament to the wear and tear such frivolity can have on trouser bottoms.
Joyce Beale was a teacher at St Mary's School, Stratford, in the 1930s. She was also a national champion skier and a member of the Stratford Mountain Club. In 1933 she donated the 'Joyce Beale Badges' for skiing achievement to the Club. In more recent years, these badges have been awarded in recognition of services to the Stratford Mountain Club. In 1937 Joyce moved to Lower Hutt, where she spent 42 years working as a professional photographer. It was there she also met and married her husband, Tom Galbraith.
