ARC2013_1425_15.jpg Hutchinson, Paul [ephemera] (1975-2008). Paul Hutchinson. Collection of Puke Ariki (ARC2013-1425).

Often described as 'the painter's painter', Paul Hutchinson has steadfastly refused to follow trends in painting. Completely self taught, he has been working full-time as an artist since he was 17, developing the skills and techniques of painting and continually exploring new mediums. One of the mediums Hutchinson is well versed in is portraiture, particularly self-portraits. From 1981 to 1982, and again in 2008, he carried out a series of ‘Portrait a Day’ sketches, religiously conducting a sketch of himself every day, in a variety of settings and moods. He recalls that he became so tired of the process that sometimes he would create the portraits with his eyes closed. However, his technique development throughout this period is evident. This disciplined method of working obviously appeals to Hutchinson, who later carried out a series of small ‘Painting a Day’ works.
