Wilfred G. Grayling farmed both sides of the sharp ridge near the top of the Tarata Saddle. To enable him to get his cows to the western block he dug a tunnel through the ridge, known as the Tarata Tunnel or "Grayling's Tunnel". The earliest mention of the latter is in the Taranaki Herald dated 4 June 1904. Modern roadworks have resulted in the northern entrance of this old stock tunnel being now around two metres above road level.
