Charles Grey won the contract to create the Okau Road Tunnel on State Highway 40 in Ahititi under a Government employment scheme during the Great Depression. Located in the middle of the Tongaporutu River, with bridges at both ends, it is thought to have opened in late 1932 or early 1933.
