The Uruti or Kaka Road Tunnel was constructed between 1916 and 1923 and links the two roads through a steep ridge. It is sometimes also known locally as the Tangitu Tunnel after the stream below.

Until it was excavated, settlers at Pehu had access only from Stratford through Kiore. The tunnel is notoriously unstable but it has continued to be maintained although closure has been proposed several times in the past.
