A permit was granted by the Borough Council to James Scanlan on 11 January 1929 for the construction of  a house on Town Section 1251 (Shortland Street) - the street address is now 52 Victoria Road. The architect was Thomas H. Bates, Boon Bros were the builders and the estimated construction cost was £2500.

James Scanlan died in 1941 and  for many  years after this was the residence of his son, Taranaki Herald editor, Brian Scanlan and his wife Anna. From the late 1960s to about 1980 the couple ran the house as a small motel - the Pukekura Lodge.
