The gates outside the Ōtākeho School were erected in 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The memorial plaques, once located on either side of the gates, were installed sometime later as a tribute to the local men killed in World War I and II.

The school closed in January 2003 and in 2018 the plaques were removed from the gateway and re-installed on a new memorial at the Otakeho Hall, Auroa Road.
