In May 1923 the Waitotara War Memorial Committee held a meeting to discuss the way forward in efforts to erect a war memorial for the community. Later in the year they wrote to the Patea County Council and announced their intention to erect memorial gates to the Domain (Hawera & Normanby Star, 11 July 1923) for £250.
However, progress was slow, and the contract was not let until January 1925, with Messrs. Walpole and Patterson of Whanganui successful. The Wanganui Chronicle reported on 26 May 1925 that the gates were finished and finally on 12 December 1925 the memorial gates were officially unveiled by the M.P. for Pātea, Mr H.G. Dickie.
