This memorial seat was erected to honour Frederick J. Cowling, a major benefactor to Barrett's Domain over the years. It was dedicated in a ceremony on 13 February 1966.
The minutes of the Barrett Domain Board indicate that planning for the memorial began as far back as 1963. There was a delay in the erection of the seat due to improvements to the domain needing to be completed.
Finally in April 1965 the Board announced that the memorial seat was almost ready and that thanks were due in large part to Mr. D. Leighton for the design and supervising the construction.
Fred donated land and planted a two hectare kauri plantation in the early 1940s.
