This viaduct connecting Vivian and Leach Streets, across Carrington Street, was officially opened on 27 November, 1976. It was designed by the firm Thomson, Buchan & Chong.

The idea to connect the two streets was first proposed as far back as 1959 (Taranaki Herald 21 September 1959). It was hoped the viaduct would help move traffic across the city faster as part of a wider transport plan.

Eventually the project went ahead and the contract was awarded to the firm, Riddick Bros and Still Ltd. It was completed three months ahead of schedule.

The bridge is 120 metres long, has two west-bound lanes and a pedestrian walkway on the southern side.
