This corner villa was constructed for John Cecil Montefiore in 1907.

This part of Native Reserve 2, Grey District, was purchased by J. C. Montefiore from L. Frost in June 1906, with Montefiore already leasing this section (and others), from Frost. Later, in December 1906, New Plymouth architect J. Jones called for tenders for the "erection of residence in Westown for J. C. Montefiore".

Montefiore only owned the property for a short period before it was sold in mid-1908. A clearing sale of Montefiore's stock and furniture was conducted by Newton King on 27 August 1908 on account of him "leaving the district" - it was noted that the furniture and implements "are practically new, having been in use about four months only".
