In May 1917, a permit for the construction of a 'cottage' for 'Grant' on Town Section 382 was granted by the Borough Council - the builder was H. Watkins, and the estimated construction cost was £785. Mrs A. E. Grant is listed as living at this location and later moved to neighbouring 90 Vivian Street.
The home was very likely designed by notable New Plymouth architect Frank Messenger, who called for tenders for the construction of a 'bungalow' in Vivian Street, in late April 1917 - this was probably one of the last homes Messenger designed before entering into partnership with Victor Griffiths in early June 1917.
