A permit for a residence for Mr Charles Hayward Burgess on Town Section 584, Standish Street, was granted by the Borough Council on 16 December 1912. Whilst the architect is not noted in the building permit register, it was of course designed by J.W. Chapman-Taylor; the estimated cost of construction was noted as £1000.
Puke Ariki holds plans for "Plas Mawr" as drawn by Jenny Goddard for the then Taranaki Museum in 1980. (ARC2009-162)
The home is registered as a Category 1 Historic Place with Heritage New Zealand.
