A permit was granted to C. Carter by the Borough Council on 13 January 1939 for the construction of a shop and residence on Part Lot 115, DP1792, corner Lawry Street and South Road - Boon Bros were the builders, and the estimated construction cost was £1750.
N.P.D.C. building files hold a plan of the building drawn by Boon Bros. Ltd. They show a shop and storeroom on the ground floor, with living quarters on the upper level.
For many years it operated as a grocery store, with a Mr Blincoe closely associated with the business. It is recalled in the excellent Don & Noel Harris book, Moturoa, that he was very generous to the 'wharfies families' during the 1951 waterfront strike.
More recently the building has been home to the Salty Dog bar and a TAB.
