With moves to stub out smoking well entrenched it is easy to forget that ‘having a fag’ was such an accepted part of New Zealand’s social life just a few years ago. This neat little personalised matchbook, designed for the wedding reception of David & Linda on 12 August 1978, is a sign that smoking at the wedding reception was encouraged by the happy couple - something almost unthinkable in today’s increasingly smoke-free environment. This matchbook was part of an assortment compiled by a collector, so the identity of David and Linda is currently unknown. But it is tempting to imagine they did turn out to be ‘a perfect match’.
