Efforts to curb reckless spending are nothing new and it seems starting them young was the driving force behind this 'Home Savings Account' tin promoted by Taranaki's home-grown bank.
These super-charged piggy banks were issued to youngsters by the New Plymouth Savings Bank in the 1950s with promises of interest to be earned on every complete pound saved.
The instructions written on the side tell savers to bring their full tins to the bank on any day except Saturday (and presumably Sunday) so the total could be noted in their pass books.
Once it was retired from active service at Vogeltown School this tin was used to hold loose change for more than 40 years. Sadly it lost its interest bearing qualities long ago.
