There are two tunnels on a spur near the Arnold Stream on the Whangamomona Road, both accessible by four-wheel drive, quad vehicle or on foot only down the Whangamomona River towards Aotuhia.
The road and its bridges are no longer maintained by the District Council, with maintenance at one point funded by four-wheel drive clubs via a jar at the Whangamomona pub.
Tunnel #1 is about six kilometres from Whangamomona, approximately 40 metres long and with a typical Gothic arch profile. The pick marks of excavators remain clearly visible on the tunnel's interior walls.
