Stanley Lewis Kettle was born 18 April 1920 in Waitara and was the son of Horace and Mary (nee Soffe) Kettle.

Before World War Two he worked as a labourer in Waitara. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served as a Gunner for the duration of the war. After the war he continued his military service as a member of Jayforce in the Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the NZ Artillery until 1948.

When he returned to New Zealand he lived in Wellington where he worked as a warehouseman. He died in Wellington on 19 December 1997.
